WALTHAM, Mass. & LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 24, 2006--- Product Indicated for Treatment of High Cholesterol and High Triglycerides Part of Growing Fenofibrate Market Conference Call with Oscient Management Scheduled for 5:30 PM ET Today Oscient Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: OSCI) has agreed to acquire U.S. rights to the cardiovascular product ANTARA(R) 130 mg (fenofibrate) capsules from Reliant Pharmaceuticals. ANTARA is part of the $1 billion fenofibrate market and will be commercialized by Oscient's national sales force, which currently is marketing FACTIVE(R) (gemifloxacin mesylate) tablets and TESTIM(R) 1% testosterone gel, upon closing. Under the terms of the agreement, Oscient will make a payment of $78 million to Reliant for U.S. rights to ANTARA, plus a purchase of approximately $4 million in existing inventory.
Sometimes I receive emails that are a bit amusing. Yesterday, I received a number emails asking if I was up to the task of reporting on the results from a study mentioned in Sally Squires' column, the Lean Plate Club, in the Washington Post.The article, 'Good' Carbs To the Rescue, highlighted findings published in the May 1 issue of the American Journal of Cardiology in the paper, Comparison of Coronary Risk Factors and Quality of Life in Coronary Artery Disease Patients With Versus Without Diabetes Mellitus. One email asked if I truly believed in reporting the findings from studies contrary to my own beliefs about diet and nutrition.To answer that simply - yes, I can, I do and I have in the past in this column!With regard to this particular study - I hadn't seen it previously and can say after reading through the paper, I did find the results intriguing, yet lacking in the detail expected when subjects with diagnoised diabetes are included in a study that specifically modifies diet as part of the design.In the above study, researchers sought to investigate the effect of dietary modification in those with coronary artery disease (CAD), some of the subjects included also had diabetes.
Mike Montemayor, who lives in San Benito, is like many veterans here in the Valley, traveling to McAllen and even as far as San Antonio to get medical care. But that's all about to change. "I used to travel but now it's getting worse, I can't drive, I can't do nothing," says Mike. Mike was a navy man, who served in World War II. But his health has deteriorated over the past few years. At 88, he has diabetes and is in a wheelchair because he broke his hip. He relies on his children to get him to and from places. "It's hard for him to get around. He has appointments to see doctors in McAllen and sometimes he has to miss an appointment because there's no one to take him," says his son John Montemayor. Mike may not have to worry about missing any more appointments.
As a veterinarian in general practice, I'd say the most common medical complaint I hear from pet owners is their pets have itchy, red skin. One of the most common reasons pets have itchy, red skin is allergies. I'd like to briefly go over some of the common symptoms, diagnostic tools and treatment options for pets with allergies. As I've already mentioned, itchy, red skin is probably the most obvious way veterinary patients show they have allergies. This can range from a case of hives with a sudden exposure (bee sting or direct contact with an allergen) to generalized hair loss and thickening of the skin due to chronic exposure to an allergen. Many times, the intense chewing and scratching caused by the itching leads to skin infections that, in turn, cause even more severe redness and itching.
