Q: I am a 55-year-old female. I take a multivitamin that has 500 mg of vitamin C, 10,000 IU of vitamin A and 400 mg of vitamin E. It also has vitamin D. I have heard and read reports that say taking vitamins can cause cancer, and dont help a persons health. Are vitamins safe? A: Our bodies do not make vitamins, except for vitamin D, so we need to get them from outside sources. Foods can provide all the vitamins we need if we eat a balanced diet. Most of us dont. Many older people, whose diets are not the best, often come close to developing a vitamin deficiency. A multivitamin is not a bad investment. Vitamins are essential for almost all chemical reactions that take place in body cells. We need them only in minuscule amounts. Vitamins dont cause cancer but more than the recommended daily allotment of some can cause trouble.

The question: Obesity remains a growing problem among adults in the United States. The condition, which is defined as having a body mass index greater than 30, increases the risk for several health problems such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Physical activity and a healthy diet play important roles in prevention. Studies have found that diets high in carbohydrates and low in fat are best for weight loss, though some experts argue that the glycemic index of a food how quickly and how high it raises blood sugars must also be considered. The theory behind low glycemic index diets holds that rapidly digested, high glycemic index carbohydrates cause fluctuations in blood glucose (sugar) and insulin levels, contributing to hunger and preventing the breakdown of fat.
Our national obsession with carbohydrates is waning, but one tool of carb counters -- the glycemic index -- continues to generate interest. To understand what the glycemic index is, you have to know what a carbohydrate is. Carbohydrates are nutrients found in a wide range of foods, including fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, beans, milk and sweets. Your body burns carbs for fuel. In fact, carbs are your body's preferred source of energy. Think of carbohydrates as premium unleaded fuel in your tank. Most of your diet should be carbohydrates, in the form of sugars, starches and fiber. Sugars are the simplest form and are digested quickly. Starches are chains of sugars that take longer to digest, and foods high in fiber take the longest.
If residents of the poorest areas in Southeast Missouri can't get to adequate health care, then a new mobile health unit unveiled Monday is intended to take health-care services to them. The Southeast Health on Wheels Mobile -- or SHOW Mobile -- will be operated and staffed by Southeast Missouri State University health-care professionals. The 38-foot "mobile health center" is actually a high-tech doctor's office inside a converted Airstream RV motorhome. "Transportation is a big problem in the Bootheel," said Cynthia Dean, CEO of Missouri Bootheel Regional Consortium, a Sikeston, Mo.,-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to reducing infant mortality rates. "This is really a wonderful opportunity to have access to health care." The unit will travel in the four Bootheel counties of Pemiscot, Dunklin, Mississippi and New Madrid starting today.
